Christmas Skin Survival Guide – Part 5

Detoxification:
If you over-indulged its time to focus on detoxification, to ensure your big night doesn’t end up exiting through your skin.

Liver Love
A healthy liver is one of the fundamental cornerstones to beautiful skin. It filters out the harmful toxins, in particular alcohol, and over time can become overloaded. Fortunately we can detoxify this vital organ with some much needed TLC.

Lemon Water
This health enhancing ritual shouldn’t just be reserved for the morning after. Begin your day with a big glass of warm water with the juice of lemon. Why warm? If you think about the temperature of your stomach, cold drinks can actually shock your digestive system, so opt for warm where possible. Lemon juice acts as a detoxifying agent, it assists in cleansing your liver and is a rich source of skin saving Vitamin C. It also benefits digestive health and boosts your immune system with its anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties.

Milk Thistle
According to nutritionist Sachiko Giorgilli, this medicinal herb has been used for over 2,000 years as a natural cure for liver ailments. It is renowned for its ability to cleanse, strengthen and enhance liver function. It also contains a powerhouse of antioxidants, along with anti-inflammatory properties that make this herbal remedy deserving of a new ritual.

Dandelion Tea
Often referred to as the miracle weed, this herb is famous for its beneficial effects on the liver, ability to balance blood sugar, purify blood and boost the immune system. It is also rich in vitamins and minerals including Calcium, Magnesium, Iron Zinc, Potassium, Vitamin B and C, and is packed with all the anti-aging antioxidants, to clear skin and get you glowing from the inside out. The beautiful Yoko Inoue, founder of Shoku Iku, has an amazing blend I highly recommend called “detox tea” containing dandelion, burdock, nettle, red clover, fennel, cinnamon, cardamon, liquorice and black pepper. What’s more it actually tastes amazing!

Pump up the Lymph
Our lymphatic system is our body’s natural “detox” center, but unlike the heart, the lymph has no pump to keep it functioning. When it becomes stagnant, cellular waste and toxins that should have been cleared away, can actually sit under the skin, wreaking havoc on our complexions. When we assist with drainage we allow fresh nutrients and oxygen to flow into our skin, giving us back that glow.

Dry Skin Brushing
Using a soft-bristle brush, gently stroke your limbs and body in long strokes towards your heart for a few minutes before you shower. Read more about Dry Skin Brushing

Massage
I’m not sure there would be anything more decadent than a massage to help you recover from the hangover blues, or you could DIY yourself with a good bottle of olive oil (even better after dry brushing!).

Citrus Fruits
Another reason to fill your water with lemon, citrus fruits cleanse and protect the lymphatic system, deliver antioxidants and boost hydration.

Movement
Even though this is probably the LAST thing you would ever want to do after a big night, I cannot tell you how much BETTER this will make you feel! Oxygen increases the rate that alcohol toxins are broken down, so bundle up and get outdoors! Whether it’s rebounding, running, or even walking, this will get your lymph system moving, get the blood pumping, deliver a lovely little dose of oxygenated blood to the brain, improve circulation and deliver fresh nutrients to the skin. It may even release some endorphins to kick those hangover blues.

A little yoga can also help reduce headache pain, get oxygen flowing and the lymph pumping, especially if you incorporate deep diaphragmatic breathing (which is incredible for releasing toxins from the body!!).

My dear friend Tina Bruce from Restore A Yoga Mum suggested the “legs up on the wall pose”. This restorative yoga posture (Vaparita Karani) is one of the most nourishing, grounding and calming poses. You lie on your back with your sit-bones as close to the wall as is comfortable for you. From there, you extend your legs up on the wall, so that the backs of your legs are resting against it. She also suggested supine spinal twists, and bananasana side bends for detoxing, and dragon lunges or sleeping swan poses for hip releasing.

Contrast Shower
A contrast shower is incredible for boosting circulation, while targeting lymphatic system. The hot water dilates the vessels while the cold water restricts them. Added bonus is that it will wake you up like nobody’s business!!
